Following up on Gal’s blog about her first year in the Netherlands, I would like to learn about more must-see locations in this beautiful country.
Gal shared about Leiden, Amsterdam, Gouda, Utrecht, and Rotterdam.
For me, The Hague and Groningen are definitely on top of the list.
As the political capital of the Netherlands, the extraordinary city has a lot of interesting sites. For example, the historical Binnenhof, where the Prime Minister’s office (‘het torentje’) is situated, the Hofvijver, ‘Plein’, Malieveld, and Lange Voorhout. Moreover, there’s the beach at Scheveningen (easily accessible by tram and bus)! If you’re interested in visiting the synagogues, there are two orthodox synagogues in the city: Scheveningen and Bezuidenhout.
2. Groningen
Groningen is the capital of the North, and as the Dutch say: “there is nothing above Groningen”. Groningen is one of the best student cities of the country, where clubs and bars don’t have any closing times. Moreover, the architecture is incredible, as not one building is built exactly the same as the building next to it. The city centre is very cute, consisting of many historical buildings. Surprisingly, the oldest buildings are ‘inhabited’ by the university! I would recommend visiting the Vismarkt, Grote Markt, Folkingestraat and Poelestraat. Just have a nice stroll around the city centre and choose one of the cosy restaurants for dinner and lunch, there are many to choose from! (House of Pita is great if you’re looking for Israeli food).
